What happened

Sample Bank said on Friday it will begin holding bitcoin and ether for a small group of institutional clients. The bank described the service as a pilot and gave no client names.

Custody means the bank would safeguard the private keys that control those assets. It doesn’t mean the bank is recommending them, and the announcement didn’t include trading.

Why it matters

Large investors often require a regulated custodian before they can hold an asset. A bank offering that service removes one practical barrier, although it doesn’t remove the price risk.

What to watch

  • Whether regulators attach conditions to the pilot
  • Who audits the bank’s holdings
  • How client assets would be treated if the bank failed
